UK TEAM BAGS SPECTACULAR SAVINGS AND SETS NEW RECORD AT THE GREAT SINGAPORE SHOPPING CHALLENGE!
A new record was set at the Great Singapore Shopping Challenge 2009, which saw seven Singapore teams and 20 international teams from nine countries pit their bargain-hunting skills against each other in a three-hour Challenge! The event was part of the Great Singapore Sale launch festivities on 30 May 2009, and up for grabs was the S$10,000 grand prize in each category.
In the International Category, the team from the United Kingdom comprising Ms Michelle Dewberry - former winner of The Apprentice in the UK, and Ms Amanda Zuydervelt, out-shopped 19 other international teams with spectacular savings of S$25,581.37, achieved from having spent just S$617.53 at the Great Singapore Sale! This translated to an average discount of an amazing 98%, and they were rewarded for their brilliant bargain-hunting skills with the grand prize of S$10,000 cash!
“The record savings of S$25,581.37 garnered by the winning international team have smashed the previous record of S$14,451.65 set by the winning Singapore team at the Great Singapore Shopping Challenge 2005,” said Ms Lau Chuen Wei, Executive Director, Singapore Retailers Association – organiser of the Great Singapore Shopping Challenge and the Great Singapore Sale 2009. “This goes to show that retailers are really slashing prices like never before to help consumers get more for less this Great Singapore Sale.”
The first runner-up was the team of Ms Angela Newman and Ms Sandra Newman from Australia, who chalked up total savings of S$11,533.20 after having spent only S$959.25 at the Sale. This translated to an average discount of 92%.
The second runner-up was the celebrity team of models-turned-actors, Mr Nguyen Binh Minh and Ms Pham Thanh Hang, from Vietnam. They chalked up total savings of S$10,626.02 after having spent only S$950.32 at the Sale. This also translated to an average discount of 92%.
In the Singapore Category, the team comprising Ms Clarissa Wong and Ms Tan Lay Ping, beat six other Singapore teams with total savings of S$6,536.01 from having spent just S$939.09 at the Sale. This translated to an average discount of 87%, which made them the Singapore winners of the grand prize of S$10,000 worth of shopping vouchers!
Ms Lau added: “Once again, the Great Singapore Shopping Challenge successfully showcased the spectacular savings that can be found at the Great Singapore Sale. If the winning teams could achieve such incredible savings in just three hours, imagine the possibilities for those who have the time to scour the stores for bargains over the eight weeks of the Great Singapore Sale!”
After the winning teams were presented with their prizes, the event aptly culminated with the Official Launch of the Great Singapore Sale 2009 by Guest-of-Honour, Miss Indranee Rajah, Deputy Speaker of Parliament & Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC.
